first fish.

Our lake house flooded last summer and this is the first time we have been down there since the repairs were complete. I just love Heron Hill. (That's my "oh-so-creative" name for our little cottage on Lake Sinclair, closely resembling Martha Stewart's moniker for her previous home in Connecticut, Turkey Hill. I'm such a wannabe.) P has been talking about fishing for months and months. I think he has a sugar-coated idea of the sport in his mind after watching the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse episode about catching red gooey fish. I have tried to explain to him several times that the fish in Lake Sinclair are not, in fact, rainbow-colored, stationary little creatures. But, I figured he would have to discover this himself.

We got to the lake house after dark, so P had to wait until morning to give fishing a go. He could.not.wait. He woke up at 4 am begging to go outside. We told him he had to wait until the sun came up, so he stood by the window until the sun peeped over the horizon, then drug Taylor down to the dock with his tackle box and fishing pole in hand. So cute. Taylor put a plastic worm on his hook, gave him a few short casting lessons, and P was set. He was a casting pro from the start. I wish I had videotaped this, but I was still snug in the bed. He casts, reels as fast as he can, then flings his line right back out. He's a speedy fisherman, if there is such a thing. Two or three casts later, his line is spinning, the pole is bending, and Taylor truly believes P has caught a log on the bottom of the lake. Nope, not our little angler. He caught a 1-pound bass, instead. This was all it took. P is hooked. Literally. He caught at least 10 more fish that day. Thank goodness the fish were biting for our little man's first fishing experience.

Not his first fish, but the first one I was awake for.

The rest of the weekend was spent on the boat, which also has been out of commission since last summer.

The captain's first mate. He loves to navigate.

EK just loved to ride.

I love our boat rides, too. Something about our boat puts my babies to sleep. Instantly. Never fails.

I wish we had a boat in our backyard for nap emergencies.
